Solvent extraction, also known as partitioning, is a process to isolate a compound found on the solubility of its parts. This is done by applying two liquids that not blend with each other. Solvent extraction is applied in the processing of perfumes, vegetable oil, or biodiesel. It is also applied to get better plutonium from irradiated nuclear fuel, a method which is generally called nuclear reprocessing. The regain plutonium can then be applied again as nuclear fuel. In this method one of the elements of a blend goes into solution in a specific liquid and the other element is isolated as a remaining part by filtration.
